When National Geographic listed the top 25 places to visit in 2025 Stockholm's archipelago made the list.

National Geographic chose Stockholm’s archipelago for its incredible, preserved natural beauty and new attractions like the Stockholm Archipelago Trail — a hiking route linking 21 islands. Sweden’s stunning coastline was highlighted alongside famous destinations like luxury train rides in Malaysia and safari parks in South Africa.

Activity and Tranquility

The Stockholm Archipelago offers not only breathtaking natural beauty that’s hard to find anywhere else, but also a wealth of outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, cycling, and kayaking.

But there’s more — thanks to tenants and entrepreneurs operating on land owned by the Archipelago Foundation, the archipelago is also a vibrant, living community. They run shops, restaurants, and accommodations that bring life and accessibility to the islands.

In its article, National Geographic highlights charming destinations such as Utö Värdshus, and includes fun facts like the surprising detail that Greta Garbo once lived there.

Magic Season

National Geographic says the best time to visit the Stockholm Archipelago, also called the “Magic Season,” is in late summer or early fall. This is when the warmth lingers and everything becomes peaceful. We couldn’t agree more — it’s the perfect season for a quiet, scenic escape.

Discovering the Archipelago

In the Stockholm Archipelago, you’ll find breathtaking nature and activities like hiking, swimming, biking, and kayaking, as well as a vibrant community on Skärgårdsstiftelsen’s lands. The archipelago has charming shops, restaurants, and places to stay, thanks to local businesses and entrepreneurs. National Geographic highlights places like Utö Värdshus, a historic inn where even Greta Garbo once stayed.
