About us

Explore Archipelago was born out of a joint project, conducted by the City of Turku and the Stockholm Archipelago Foundation between 2019 and 2021. The project, Archipelago Access, received funding from the European Regional Development Fund’s Interreg Central Baltic Programme and led to the creation of two exhibitions as well as this digital service. The total budget was €1.46 million over three years.

The project was devised to showcase the vast archipelago landscape between Finland and Sweden in a more cohesive way as well as encourage sustainable travel. The sea and the archipelago have long been important to the City of Turku and the Stockholm Archipelago Foundation, and both organisations want visitors to be able to enjoy this landscape for many years to come.

The two exhibitions - one in Turku and the other on the island of Utö in the Stockholm Archipelago – opened in May 2021. Both provide an insight into the beauty and fragility of the archipelago, while inspiring visitors to play their part in protecting this spectacular landscape.

Like the two exhibitions, Explore Archipelago seeks to inspire visitors. It is the first time that the entire archipelago, from Finland to Sweden, has been presented as a whole, making it easier for visitors to find information, plan trips, and experience this unique area. Explore Archipelago is managed by the City of Turku in partnership with the Stockholm Archipelago Foundation.
