Visit a lighthouse, learn about life in the past, stroll through a museum, or visit an architectural masterpiece. Here are three great places to start:
1. Roland Svensson Museum
Roland Svensson (1910–2003) was one of Sweden’s most beloved artists and is represented at the National Museum, among other prestigious institutions. His paintings and writings vividly depict the archipelago and its inhabitants, notably through his popular works often described as simple yet never trivial – as well as in his book “Skärgårdsliv i gången tid” (“Archipelago Life in Days Gone By”). Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the museum located at Ramsmora Brygga on Möja – open year-round. Albert Engström's studio in Grisslehamn is also well worth a visit.
2. Artipelag
At Artipelag, you’ll find 3,000 square meters of art and exhibitions, along with delicious food, events, a boutique, and various activities. This architectural masterpiece is nestled in enchanting surroundings, where you can freely roam along scenic nature trails. It’s just a 30-minute drive from the city.
3. Archipelago Museum
Curious about what Stockholm’s archipelago looked like in the past? In an old general store at Stavsnäs Summer Harbor, you’ll find the Archipelago Museum, with additional exhibits on Nämdö and Runmarö. Here, you can explore historical photographs and stories from the archipelago through the ages.
