From the Queen’s Cave to Stora Sand - Experience the Magic of Nåttarö!

Nåttarö is an archipelago dream just thirty minutes from Nynäshamn. Here you’ll find sandy beaches and tranquillity, but also stories reaching back to the 13th century - from the queen’s hidden cave to the Russian ovens that still stand guard along the cliffs. Right now, in the magical late-summer light, the island reveals its most enchanting side.
Visiting Nåttarö is like stepping into another world. The scent of pine forest mixes with the salty sea breeze, and the island’s long beaches stretch out before you. At Stora Sand, one of the largest beaches in the archipelago, you’re greeted by endless horizons and shallow waters perfect for swimming. If you long for stillness, Storsand awaits on the other side of the island, reached by a winding path through forest and gravel roads. For those who want to see even more, the Stockholm Archipelago Trail leads you through a varied landscape of woods, cliffs, and sweeping sea views.
Ever-present history
History is ever-present here. As early as the 13th century, the island was mentioned as Nutarn, and in the 17th century the Östmar croft was built – still standing today as a reminder of life from centuries past. When Russian forces ravaged the archipelago in 1719, the farm was burned down, yet traces remain in the small stone ovens (ryssugnar) that still stand at Bötesudden. Deep in the forest lies the Queen’s Cave, where Queen Maria Eleonora is said to have sought refuge in her grief - perhaps carrying King Gustav II Adolph’s heart in a golden casket. Even now, these legends add to the magical feeling of the light falling across the island.
Around fifty charming cottages, open until the end of September, make it easy to stay overnight. For those seeking flavours to match the setting, Nåttarö Krog by the steamboat jetty offers delicious dinners. In august, they are open Sunday–Thursday 12–20 and Friday–Saturday 12–21. In September, opening hours are Friday and Saturday 12–20 and Sundays 12–15. Read more here.
