Hiking in Stockholm archipelago

Hiking in the archipelago is an experience that many appreciate – largely due to the diverse nature they encounter along the way.

Sometimes the landscape can resemble the southernmost part of Skåne in the south of Sweden, and other times it might feel like you're on a hill in Västerbotten in the north  – all within the same hiking day. What's so special about hiking in Stockholm's archipelago is that you can find relatively untouched nature with mountains, valleys, and forests that haven't been exploited – yet are conveniently close to the city. You can easily get here and the adventure starts right at the pier.

Waterfront everywhere

Wherever you hike in Stockholm's archipelago, you have the opportunity to follow the shoreline and enjoy the feeling of being on an adventure – amidst forests, cliffs, and rolling waves. Each island has its own specific character, like Utö with its meadows and beaches, the bustling summer vibe of Sandhamn, or the tranquility of Nåttarö. Another advantage is that you can easily choose the type of hike that suits you – from going from inn to inn enjoying food from some of Sweden's best chefs, or perhaps a quiet walk where you don't have to meet a single person – but still have the opportunity to stop and take a swim along the way.

Year-round hiking

Embarking on an adventure and finding new experiences doesn't need to be expensive or complicated. It's easy to get out and enjoy lakeside and seaside adventures – all year round. In the archipelago, each season provides a beautiful natural experience, perhaps especially in the summer, but also in the fall when the leaves blaze in red and orange, or when the birds sing in the spring – or perhaps in the middle of winter when the lays thick.

Discover nature together

The areas managed by Skärgårdsstiftelsen – especially on the mainland – are accessible to all types of hikers, experienced or inexperienced. By following the marked trails, you can adjust the difficulty level of your hike according to your company. You can go far within the boundaries of a single area and find more challenging trails, or choose a shorter route that goes through comfortable terrain from the parking lot and around a moderate loop. Here, everyone has the opportunity to get into nature – both those who prefer to stay close to settlements and those who appreciate being on their own. The trails are many and long, and if you want to stop and take a break, there are often amenities such as grill areas – depending on where you choose to start from and which trail you choose.

Eating out (literary)

In Sweden Allemansrätten makes it possible to hike (almost) where ever you want. Feel free to follow the information on tourist maps to see the number of kilometers for the trails, how they move, and what terrain you can expect to pass through. You are also free to move along the paths, but be sure to be attentive to nature so you don't harm it. But regardless of whether you choose a trail or a path, the archipelago offers a beautiful hiking experience.

Bring water

Some islands have plenty of services, others don't, so as usual it's good to always have water and emergency provisions with you.

Bring a change of clothes

It can be nice to have a change of clothes with you, such as full coverage clothing even when it's warm. Not just to avoid ticks but also in case the weather changes. And don't forget sunscreen during the hot months.

Keep track of time

Always plan your trip and make sure you know the ferry departure times, service opening hours, and so on. Some islands also offer accommodation for tired feet.

Did you know...

...that there are approximately 9.5 kilometers of trails on our mainland areas that we have or are going to mark to make even more accessible. For example, Riddersholm 10.8 km, Björnö 11 km, Gålö 33.3 km, Häringe 20.7 km, or Käringboda 20.1 km. Learn more and find more activities at explorearchipelago.com
